Tuesday in the Greenhouse

Seeded flats

It finally arrived! The day I have been waiting for all winter. The greenhouse at Rutgers Gardens is finally open. Not a lot to do for herbs today, but it was still great to get out, see my fellow volunteers and start getting ready for Spring Flower Fair, our big annual fundraiser.

The soil table saw a lot of action today as volunteers seeded and potted up cuttings. The misting table is steadily filling up with flats of seeds and seedlings. As the spring progresses, work in the greenhouse will speed up. Soon space will be at a premium and we’ll be anxious for warmer weather so we can move the perennials into the unheated hoop house to make room in the greenhouse for the annuals and the tropical plants.

For anyone who wants a sneak peek at what herbs we will be selling in May, here’s what we seeded today:

Holy Basil
Lemon Basil
Lime Basil
Greek Dwarf Basil
Cinnamon Basil
Finissimo Verde A Palla Basil
Siam Queen Thai Basil
White Horehound
Yarrow

  1. Can you make some suggestions for using herbs in a topiary? I’m in zone 8b and am looking for a tight growing evergreen herb with small leaves. In a few years, I could use colored Sedums for the paint squishing out of the tube. I’m just at a loss on what evergreen herb to plant that would become the tube of paint.

    Thank you for your help.
